I want to travel to a country that is in a different time zone - do I still have to work during my company's regular business hours?

Your company does allow workations in the entire world? What a fantastic opportunity to travel around the globe and discover new cultures!

To find out in which timezone your destination country is and what the difference to your companys timezone is, please check out this helpful website of Worlddate.info with a list of all available contries and their very own timezones.

The most commonly used time zone is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is also known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), representing the 0° in longitude or the Prime Meridian.

  • Australia Central Standard Time (ACST) has an offset of UTC +09:30. ACST is followed in the central portion of Australia, including Adelaide and Darwin.

  • Central European Time (CET) has an offset of UTC +01:00. This time zone is changed to Central European Summer Time or Central European during Daylight Saving Time. Albania, Algeria, Austria, Belgium, and Denmark are some of the countries that follow CET.

  • Eastern Standard Time (EST) has an offset of UTC -05:00. This time zone is changed to Eastern Daylight Time during DST. New York, Toronto, and Atlanta are some of the places that follow EST.

  • Pacific Standard Time (PST) has an offset of UTC -08:00. It becomes Pacific Daylight Time during DST. Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas are some of the places that follow PST.

  • Western European Time (WET) has an offset of UTC 00:00. United Kingdom, Ireland, and Portugal follow WET.

  • The East Asian countries have three time zones: UTC+7, UTC+8, and UTC+9. UTC+7 is mainly used in the western part of Mongolia, while UTC+8 is used in Mongolia (eastern part), China, Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Japan and the Koreas observe UTC+9.

  • Five time zones are observed across Southern Asia, including UTC+4 (Afghanistan), UTC+5 (Pakistan and Maldives), UTC+5.5 (Sri Lanka and India), UTC+5.75 (Nepal), and UTC+6 (Bhutan and Bangladesh)

How you have to work while being abroad in a different timezone is clearly defined in the company policy of your employer. Please make sure to carefully read it and get back to your manager or HR department for any open questions.

We recommend to discuss with your manager upfront how you can organise your working hours during your workation and still contribute to the schedule of your team.

To read more about the art of good workationing and how you can start your very first workation we have prepared a helpful "5 step workation guide".
