When choosing the UK as your social security country on your profile, the platform will ask you to fill in additional questions so that we can apply for an A1 certificates for your requests when needed. These questions are needed for the UK portal (HMRC) which asks specific questions based on nationality to determine social security coverage and compliance with UK and international regulations. This article contains the key questions and their purposes:
1. Did you live or work in an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland before 1 January 2021?
This question appears only if you are EU/EEA/Swiss nationals.
HMRC uses this information to assess whether pre-Brexit social security coordination rules still apply to you. If you lived or worked in one of these countries before January 1, 2021, you may still be entitled to certain social security benefits under prior agreements.
2. Do you have a current right to reside in an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland that was acquired before 1 January 2021?
This question appears only if you are UK nationals.
HMRC checks whether you obtained residency in one of these countries before Brexit. This helps determine if you remain covered under previous social security agreements, ensuring compliance and avoiding errors in contributions.
3. What is your type of right to work in the UK?
This question appears only for non-UK/Irish nationals.
HMRC uses this information to verify your right to work in the UK, ensuring compliance with social security rules and preventing contribution issues.
The answer for this question is pre-defined with two options:
Settled or Pre-Settled EUSS Status
Leave to Remain
Here’s an explanation of both options and when to choose each one:
Settled or Pre-Settled EUSS Status
You should choose this option if you:
Are an EU, EEA, or Swiss national who applied for and received status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS). Settled status allows permanent residence and work in the UK, while pre-settled status permits a 5-year stay, after which you can apply for settled status.
Leave to Remain
You should choose this option if you:
Hold a visa that allows you to stay and work in the UK for a specific period, such as Skilled Worker Visa, Health and Care Worker Visa, Student Visa with work rights, Family/Partner Visa or any other visa granting temporary residence with work authorization.
Do not have EUSS status but have permission to remain in the UK under a visa category.
