What is a domestic workation?

A domestic trip is any trip taken within the employee’s payroll country, often referred to as an "inland workation." This feature allows employees to request domestic workations directly in WorkFlex.

Many enterprise clients reported that employees frequently take domestic workations, but tracking these trips outside of WorkFlex (e.g., with spreadsheets and calendars) has proven challenging. With the domestic workation feature, all trip requests can now be managed in WorkFlex.

How the domestic workation feature works

  • Balance deduction: The number of days taken for domestic workations will be deducted from the employee’s total workation balance.

  • Approval flow: Domestic workation requests follow the same approval process as other workations, ensuring consistency with company policies.

Note: Commuters and remote workers are excluded from this feature.

Activating the domestic workation feature

HR Admin can enable or disable the domestic workation feature based on their company's preferences.

To enable/disable the domestic workation feature:

  • Go to Company settings in the left menu.

  • Navigate to Workation policy.

  • Scroll down and enable or disable the Payroll Country toggle.

  • When disabled: If this feature is disabled, employees will not see their payroll country as an available destination when selecting a trip location.

  • When enabled: If the feature is enabled, employees will be able to choose their payroll country as a destination for workation requests. The system will display a reminder indicating that selecting the payroll country will count as a domestic workation.

Note: additional workation questions will be greyed out.

Note: Payroll country settings are chosen in profile settings, under official info section. Click here for more info on setting up your payroll country.

Risk assessment and social security documents

No risk assessment neither A1 certificate/Certificate of Coverage is required for domestic workations. The risk assessment status will therefore show as "Not required." and the options for the documents will not be shown.

HR managers can use this Not required status filter to view only domestic workations:
